Volunteer Description:

Volunteering at Facets is great for anyone interested in event coordination, film, fundraising, writing, marketing, publicity, non-profit development & PR. Some opportunities are seasonal, some are based on need, and some are year-round. Volunteer opportunities are available with the following Facets programs: 

  • Facets Cinematheque – evening screenings for adults
  • Facets Special Events – receptions, dinners and filmmaker appearances
  • Facets Development/Fundraising – support and sponsorship
  • Chicago International Children’s Film Festival (Oct/Nov) – films and workshops for children & families
  • Facets Kids Film Camp (June/July) – our flagship program teaching film appreciation, film production and critique
  • Other Facets or Facets Children + Youth Program (screenings/workshops/events) – year-round events, screenings and workshops

Organization Description:

Founded in 1974, Facets Multi-Media is a non-profit organization dedicated to the exhibition, distribution & education of foreign, independent & classic films through Facets Cinema, Facets Rentals, the Facets DVD label, and Facets Film School classes. Facets Children + Youth programs include Facets Kids Film Camp, teaching film theory, critique and basic film production to kids ages 7-14, the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival (an Academy-qualifying film festival), the largest festival of films for children in North America featuring over 200 films from 40 countries, and year-round screenings & workshops for schools groups & families.

Get hooked with these fabulous volunteer opportunities:

Box Office/Concessions: Movies are at the heart of what we do. Be a part of general Facets evening screenings for adults or special daytime screenings for families. Opportunities may include ticket sales, concession sales, will call check in, guest liaison, and theater ticket taker. When: Evenings, year-round -OR- Weekend mornings & afternoons; 2-5 hour shifts.

Social Media Ambassador: Do you love to post on Facebook, Tweet, or blog? Help us publicize Facets Programs by being a part of our social media network. We send you details on upcoming programs, and you tell all your friends! It’s as easy as that.  When: Year-round. 

Poster/Schedule Distribution: Get the word out on the street! Help us distribute Facets materials (posters, brochures, schedules, flyers) to businesses, organizations, schools, & parks. When: Year-round.

Workshop Assistant: Assist with Festival and year-round filmmaking workshops. Opportunities could include:  workshop set up, greeting & check in of participants, facilitation [arts & crafts/tech], documentation (publicity photos), discipline, handouts, bathroom breaks, snacks, clean up, and preparing a workshop report. Previous filmmaking or animation experience is a plus, but not required. When: Year-round. Primarily weekends, 2-6 hours.

Special Events (receptions/dinners/appearances): Red carpet fun! Facets hosts special receptions and events throughout the year. Celebrate film, filmmakers, and the Children’s Film Festival by helping with guest check in, decoration, or reception set up & facilitation. When: Year-round and during the Festival. Primarily afternoons and evenings, 3-6 hours.

Lobby Assist./Info Table: Eager to please? Help answer general questions about programs & screenings, audience feedback forms and promotional materials, pointing people in the right direction (bathroom, ticket lines, theaters, etc.), and keeping the lobby clean & organized. When: Festival 4-5 hour shifts available Festival weekends approx. 8:30am to 5:30pm; schedules vary per venue and date.

Group Screening Assistance (weekdays): Help us welcome thousands of Chicago kids who attend group screenings! When: Festival Weekday mornings, 3-5 hours; 8:30am to about 1/1:30pm.

Filmmaker & VIP Transportation: Meet the filmmakers! Help with guest filmmaker and VIP transportation to the many special Facets screenings, workshops and events. When: Year-round; 2-5 hours.

Projecting/Technical Assistance:  Volunteer behind the scenes by assisting with projection or workshop/event tech. Please note any projection (film, DVD or digital files) or filmmaking experience you may have. When: Festival and year-round. 4-5 hour shifts available weekdays and weekends; schedules vary per venue and date.

Research/Public Relations:  Help us grow! Making connections and building relationships with businesses, organizations, funders, and families. When: Year-round.
