Summer Film Institute

At Facets Summer Film Institute, you will…

  • Learn how film works as an art form and as cultural history.
  • Gain the foundation and tools you need to inspire your students through film.
  • Build a collection of resources and strategies to take back to your classroom.
  • Watch, discuss, and be provoked by classic and contemporary films from some
    of the greatest filmmakers in cinema. 

It’s a summer experience that will transform you (and your students) for a lifetime!

How It Works

Film scholars provide expert instruction on film aesthetics, film history, and film techniques, including:

  1. The Impact of Film Editing
  2. Lighting, Camera Angles, and Set Design
  3. Narrative in Cinema
  4. History and Society in the Movies
  5. Classic Hollywood Movies

Each morning includes an introductory lecture supported by articles and handouts. In the afternoon, you’ll watch a feature film, then apply and deepen your learning through discussion, activities, and worksheets you can adapt for use in your own classroom.



When: 2013 dates TBA, from 9:00am to 4:30 pm

Where: Facets Multi-Media, 1517 W. Fullerton Ave., Chicago, IL 60614 (Free parking on Fullerton and neighboring side streets.)

Meals: Breakfast foods and coffee will be provided in the morning from 9am to 9:30am.
One hour lunch break (lunch not included).

Credits: 30 CPDUs for the week.

Cost: $395; Facets Members: $350 (includes all handouts and materials). Many schools offer reimbursement for the fee. Ask your school about payment reimbursement options.
